KAOS went on the air January 1, 1973. KAOS largest listening audience is currently between the ages of 18 and 35 years old, though the numbers of older listeners seems to be increasing. Now that KAOS is streaming live on the Internet.
KAOS is licensed to The Evergreen State College, and it operates under Evergreen's Student Activities unit. KAOS' programming is eclectic, covering a wide variety of interests and cultures. The station's highest priority is news and information, followed by cultural programming. Within these mission-driven parameters, KAOS maintains a broadly defined and flexible format.
Coverage Area: Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater, Thurston County, Shelton, Mason County, portions of Lewis, Pierce and Kitsap Counties, reaching as far as the San Juan Islands and Victoria, B.C.
The scope of programming on KAOS includes jazz, blues, reggae, hip-hop, classical, swing, soul, rap, celtic, new acoustic and electronic music, women's, Native American, Spanish language, classic and alternative rock, film and Broadway, comedy, radio theater, spoken word, Pacifica News, Democracy Now!, local, national and international public affairs, call-in discussion and more.
